The Hornby Education Trust places a premium on building capacity for English language teaching in low- and middle-income countries. This initiative grants Master’s degree scholarships to educators and related professionals demonstrating relevant experience and evident potential to influence and enrich the landscape of English language teaching and learning in their home country.

For the upcoming academic year in September 2024, the Trust is offering up to ten (10) fully funded scholarships for students who fulfill the University of Exeter’s admissions criteria for the MEd TESOL Programme.

 

These scholarships aim to recognize and support academically adept and experienced candidates who are citizens of, and actively contribute to, low and middle-income countries as identified in the OECD DAC list.

Aim and Benefits of Hornby Trust Scholarship

Scholarship includes;

  • Full fees
  • A stipend totalling at least £15,500 (spread over monthly payments) to cover accommodation and living costs (Exact stipend amount, to be confirmed on the acceptance of the award).
  • Return international travel costs*

*Covers one journey to the UK at the start of the course and one journey back to your home country at the end of the course. An open return ticket is encouraged.

 

Requirements for Hornby Trust Scholarship Qualification:

  • Applicants must be residents of and employed in a low or middle-income country as specified in the OECD DAC list (refer to this list).
  • A minimum of three years’ full-time TESOL teaching or relevant professional experience is required post the first degree.
  • Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree (with grades equivalent to UK upper 2nd class honours or higher) or a pertinent postgraduate degree.
  • Prior to applying for the Hornby Scholarship, applicants must first submit a regular postgraduate application to the University of Exeter for the MEd TESOL program. Following this, they will receive an Exeter student number, which is a prerequisite for the Hornby Scholarship application.

Selection Process:

  • Applicants shortlisted for an interview will be notified no later than April 15, 2024.
  • Interviews are scheduled for the weeks commencing Monday, April 29, and Monday, May 6.
  • Final outcomes for shortlisted candidates will be communicated by May 22, 2024.
  • Candidates selected for the shortlist may be reimbursed the English Language test fee, a requirement for acceptance into the MEd TESOL program (To be Confirmed).
