AS Media Scholarship Programme 2024 for journalists and online content creators

The IAS Media Scholarship Programme is currently accepting applications and is open to journalists, media specialists, and online content creators who are at least 18 years old during the conference. Applicants should fall into one of the following three categories:

Category 1:

Individuals in this category include journalists, photographers, and videographers who are either employed by or on assignment for a recognized print, radio, broadcast, or online media outlet sponsored by a consumer, medical, community-based, or HIV service organization.

Category 2:

This pertains to public-facing communications professionals affiliated with a recognized non-profit HIV research, advocacy, or policy organization. Their roles should be directly linked to supporting media coverage of presentations at AIDS 2024. Applications under this category will undergo individual review, and each organization is limited to submitting a maximum of three applications. Once three applications have been submitted and approved, the organization will not be eligible to submit any further applications.

Category 3:

This encompasses social media influencers who make substantial contributions to the field of HIV and/or broader public health or possess strong connections with key populations. Eligible individuals in this category should have a following of over 50,000 on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, or YouTube.

Scholarships Evaluation:

Priority in the selection process will be given to media scholarship applicants who:

  • Work for national or international top-tier media outlets with a broad regional, national, or international reach, across various mediums.
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of covering HIV and/or infectious diseases, with encouragement for both scientific and broader reporting.
  • Are based in resource-limited settings or represent target countries/regions of interest, including South and Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, central, eastern, western, and southern Africa, as well as eastern Europe and central Asia.

Scholarship Worth

Recipients of the IAS Media Scholarship will be granted the following benefits based on the needs specified in their application:

  • Registration for both in-person and virtual attendance, providing access to all sessions at the conference venue and the virtual platform.
  • Travel support, encompassing a pre-paid economy class return ticket from the nearest international airport in the recipient’s country of residence, valid for the conference and pre-conference dates.
  • Accommodation, comprising a single room in a budget hotel, for the duration of the conference and pre-meetings.

Consequently, applicants are advised against pre-booking accommodation, flights, or registering for the conference if they have requested financial support of this nature in their application. In the event of being selected for the scholarship with the full requested financial support granted, reimbursement for these pre-incurred costs will not be possible.
