The Wells Mountain Initiative endeavors to instigate social change through education and community development. This is achieved by offering student scholarships and skills training to promising young individuals in the developing world.

The initiative aims to construct a network of grassroots leaders who play a pivotal role in catalyzing transformation within their communities.


The Wells Mountain Initiative (WMI) actively cultivates social change at the grassroots level, establishing a worldwide network of grassroots leaders dedicated to catalyzing community transformation in 47 developing countries. Our focus is on supporting resilient young individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to overcoming adversity and leading change within their communities.

WMI provides financial support for their undergraduate studies in critical sectors, facilitates their leadership in social service projects throughout their academic journey, and stands by them to address any challenges, ensuring their successful completion of studies.

Qualification Criteria for Wells Mountain Initiative Scholars Program

Our Ideal Candidate – A student, regardless of gender, hailing from a developing country, should meet the following criteria:

  • Successful completion of secondary education with good to excellent grades
  • Age 35 or under as of March 1, 2024
  • Intent to study in their home country or another developing country
  • Pursuing their first bachelor’s degree or diploma
  • Enrollment in a program benefiting the community or contributing to the growth of their home country
  • Plans to reside and work in their home country after graduation
  • Demonstrated commitment to giving back through prior volunteer work
  • Availability of some funds for education, but unable to pursue tertiary education without financial assistance
  • Ineligibility for family members of WMI Staff and WMI Scholars to apply

Selection Process for Wells Mountain Initiative Scholars Program

  • Applications must be submitted by March 1 each year for consideration in the following academic year.
  • WMI Scholars undergo a comprehensive multi-step review process.
  • Selected WMI Scholars will be notified via email on August 1, with their names published on the WMI website homepage and Facebook page.
  • Unsuccessful applicants will also receive notification post-August 1.

Important Dates

  • December 1, 2023 – The 2024 WMI Scholars Program application will be accessible on our website, with acceptance of completed 2024 applications commencing on this date.
  • March 1, 2024 – Deadline for the 2024 WMI Scholars Program application.
Documents Required for Application

Applications from qualified applicants will be accepted until March 1, 2024. Before applying, we strongly encourage you to read the WMI Scholar Program Information Sheet and also the Frequently Asked Questions for Prospective Scholars document. These two documents will assist you in determining your eligibility and guide you in the application process.

The following are required elements for an application to be considered complete:

  • Clear personal photo
  • Essay (topic is stated on application form)
  • 2024 application form
  • Personal essay statement
  • Two recommendation letters
  • Official transcript of grades from secondary school
  • Official grading key to interpret secondary school grades
  • Official transcript of grades from tertiary studies (if applicable)
  • Official grading key to interpret tertiary grades
  • Official results from your national exam
  • Official grading key to interpret scores on your national exam
